Company of St George

The aims of the Company of St George are thus:

  • To develop a strong camaraderie with other companions, built on mutual trust and respect.
  • To improve skill in arms and knowledge in medieval crafts.
  • To actively foster good relations with other groups and households and in particular new groups starting out in our immediate vicinity.

While off the field, a companion of the Company of St George shall be clothed thus:

  • Leather turn shoes.
  • Appropriate hose and linen underwear.
  • Linen shirt.
  • Fitted coathardie or other appropriate coat.
  • A hood with lirripipe or other appropriate headwear.
  • A belt, pouch and dagger.

While on the field, a companion shall be armoured thus:

  • Any favour one is fortunate enough to bear.
  • For the head: a visored bassinet with mail aventail or great helm shall be worn.
  • For the legs: full steel articulated legs should be worn. Greaves are required but may cover the front of the shin only. Although cuirboilli and velvet covered legs were period, for the uniform look of the unit, full steel legs are required.
  • For the body: a white jupon with the red cross of Saint George shall cover whatever arm and body armour is worn.
  • While the body armour under the jupon is not stipulated here, appropriate body armour for the period would be: a mail hauberk, a breastplate or a coat of plates.
  • For the hands: while fighting with pole weapons, steel gauntlets shall be worn.
  • For the feet: leather boots shall be worn. Mail or plate sabatons are encouraged.
  • All armour shall meet the minimum standards of the SCA and any additional Kingdom requirements wherever we may fight. Also, it shall look authentic, fit well, be of superior manufacture and be maintained in good working order.

A companion shall remain proficient with, and keep in good working order:

  • A sword.
  • A white heater shield bearing the red cross of Saint George.
  • A pole weapon such as a spear, pike or glaive. Ideally, with a pennon bearing the red cross of Saint George and the persons own arms.

ompanions of The Company of Saint George will behave in a manner that brings honour and renown to The Company. It is recognised that companions will have commitments to other people, households and groups. These commitments are to be respected by The Company, the people, households and groups held in high regard, because of their association.

All companions shall have a skill or trade, which shall be actively researched, practiced and taught to other companions who show interest and ability. These include: cooking, heraldry, armouring, brewing, sewing, cobbling, leatherwork, carpentry, pottery, tent-making, medicine, keeping records and accounts and any other skill which The Company find desirable.

All companions shall treat in a polite, friendly and courteous manner all persons, unless they have proven themselves beyond any doubt to be ill mannered, a scoundrel or a rascal.

All companions shall refrain from needless murder, theft, arson and rape except as at the lawful command of the Crown.

Admittance to The Company of Saint George requires the agreement of at least two thirds of The Company. The Company welcomes enquiry by prospective members.
